The Medical Writing Institute mentors science and health professionals in procedures needed by health and life science professionals working in the international health industry, with a focus on the US pharmaceutical industry, in healthcare and in academic institutions.

Our main goal is to land jobs, grants, and contracts for our members and fellows.

You may find after speaking with Dr Dodgson (no charge, no obligation for an hour-long consultation) that while you want to change your own career path, that another career in the international health industry is a better fit: clinical research associate, medical director, academic faculty, statistician, programmer, MSL, medical editor, academic research assistant, graduate student.

The Medical Writing Institute will help you find the career path that works for you; certificates are awarded in medical affairs as well as in medical writing. Dr Dodgson has helped additionally a marine engineer, a computer scientist and an environmental scientist land jobs; all as far removed from medical writing as can be imagined.

If you are a health science professional or a life sciences MS or PhD who needs to be paid more while continuing what you are doing, or who is bored with what you are doing, or wants to change direction entirely, the Medical Writing Institute will work with you figuring out what works for you.

This help may be working on grant proposals and business plans and teaching you how to target audiences; editing medical journal manuscripts and preparing slide decks; it may mean moving from clinical to corporate. It may also mean writing and publishing health fiction. Or making medical videos. Or working as a research scientist or teacher at a university. Or indeed, landing a job or contract as a medical writer in a pharmaceutical company or a contract research organization, or working from home as a freelance medical writer. We have done all of these things.

We help you build your portfolio and give you the skills you need to market yourself for a career in the pharmaceutical industry or in academia.

All training is online when you enrol in the Medical Writing Institute directly. You will be assigned a faculty member who will go through the currciulum with you, help you set up a business, direct you where and how to get contracts, and teach you how to prepare documents for regulatory and university clients.

Faculty members are fluent in a number of languages and can give onsite training throughout Africa, Asia, Europe, South America and the United States of America. We are not expensive, but we are professional.

Medical Writing Institute Certificates can be earned in 5-10 weeks if you do nothing else, 12 to 20 weeks of hard work is more usual. You can also spread it out over a year. Or forever. Once you become a member of the Medical Writing Institute, you have access to training, networking, references, advice forever, or at least until 2026, hopefully much longer.

We work with you until you complete your grant proposal, or get a decent-paying job or contract. As long as it takes. We don't take you on unless we know we can help you.

Medical Journal of Therapeutics Africa was first published as a stand-alone pdf 3 times a year, as a medium for showcasing medical writing talents of working medical writers. Health concerns in Africa and African communities were the focus of the journal because positive stories about African professionals are rarely seen in European and American presses.

Why Africa?

First, because we all came from Africa: recently, a few years ago, a few centuries ago, a few millennia ago... we all came from Africa.

Second, because the whole world trades with African countries. Global pharmaceutical companies in the United States, China, India, South Africa make drugs for East Africa and West Africa. The United States, Asia and Europe take African plants and make drugs from them. We all came from Africa, and Africa continues to heal us, nurture us.
